Day 1. Arrive Sikkim Bagdogra Airport or Nepal Bhadrapur airport or by drive and Drive to Darjeeling. On arrival in Darjeeling you will check-in to the Hotel and there will be time for a rest before a short orientation stroll around the hotel and the surrounding mall. It was to this town, situated on a ridge at 2134 meters beneath the great mass of Kanchenjunga (at 8598 metres the world’s third highest peak), that the Viceroys of India, (and after 1911 the lieutenant-governors of Bengal) came to escape the summer heat of the Indian plains. Its stately edifices and winding malls reflect clearly the powerful presence of the British Raj in this region. (Overnight Darjeeling Mayfair Resort) BLD or other simple Hotel
Day 2. SIGHTSEEING IN Darjeeling
• Himalayan Mountaineering Institute
• Tibetan Refugee Centre
• Ghang-La, family home of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa
After breakfast at the hotel your coach will drive you the short distance to the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. This institute was established in 1954 under the patronage of India’s first Prime Minister Sri Jawharlal Nehru, with Tenzing Norgay as Director of Field Training. It houses a museum of Everest memorabilia as well as a record of Everest ascents.
You will return to the MAYFAIR Hotel for a light lunch before travelling by coach to the Tibetan Refugee Centre on the outskirts of Darjeeling town. The centre was established in October 1959 to help rehabilitate Tibetan refugees who had fled from Tibet with the Dalai Lama following the Chinese invasion. The centre now operates a carpet and handicrafts factory, a pre-school for Tibetan children and a home for the Tibetan aged. It produces superb carpets and is one of the only places where one can still purchase or order Tibetan carpets in centuries-old traditional styles and designs. The wood-carved and leather curios are also excellent and the factory workers are most happy for you to wander through and watch them at their craft.
From the Refugee Centre you will drive to Ghang-La, family home of the late Tenzing Norgay Sherpa. Ghang-La is not open to the public as it is still used by Tenzing’s children. You will have afternoon tea here while wandering the house with its extraordinary Buddhist prayer room, personal Everest memorabilia, and a wonderful collection of family photographs of Tenzing, the most famous of all Sherpas. All its rooms evoke the halcyon days when Darjeeling summers were abuzz with an endless stream of balls, dinners and gymkhanas when the British moved to the hills for the hot season. From the Club you will take a leisurely walk down winding streets to the old Darjeeling railway station to board the famous "Toy Train" for a one-hour journey the world’s highest railway station at Ghoom (8,000ft).
